Oral Pathology Microbiology
In the changing world of dental sciences where the specialties and superspecialties are taking great strides, the oral pathologist have to cope up with diagnostic and research demands. Oral Pathology and Microbiology is the specialty of dentistry and discipline of pathology that deals with the nature, identification and management of diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial regions. Clinical dentistry is largely based on the foundation of study of normal dental anatomy and oral histology followed by the study of oral pathological processes.
The department of Oral Pathology and Microbiology is concerned with teaching and conducting practical classes of dental anatomy and oral histology for BDS Ist year students and teaching oral pathology and microbiology to BDS IIIrd year students. The department has maintained an oral pathology teaching laboratory and museum containing approximately 200 specimens where the BDS IIIrd year students are trained to perform routine histopathological evaluation of specimens/slides related to oral pathology. They are taught to comprehend different types of pathological processes that include the oral cavity, the manifestations of common diseases, their diagnosis, correlation with clinicopathological process and an understanding of oral manifestations of systemic diseases. The BDS IIIrd year students are also imparted a basic knowledge of forensic odontology. The routine cytological techniques demonstration is also given.The department places special emphasis on early diagnosis and detection of precancerous lesions and conditions. The department head ia a active member of ICMR and has been imparting training to dental surgeons under cancer control project.
Clinicopathological discussions are held regularly with faculties of Oral Medicine and Radiology as per DCI guidelines. The department faculty also holds regular journal discussions with interns related to latest articles.
